Education and training

Hi everyone,

I am amazed with the amount of training they are offering me in my unit since the beginning. There is an education team that is constantly making sure I am up to date with all the mandatory courses and besides that, they offer me courses to progress from band 5 to band 6.
There are three main courses the education team have asked me to apply for: the mentorship course, the conversion course from adults to paediatrics and the intensive care course. They have told me it would take more or less three years to undertake these three courses.
I think I will start with the intensive care course this year.

Do your units offer the same amount of training as mine does?

Cheers,
Ana

  1. Hi, Ana
The Pharmacy Department offers a variety of training from ad hoc teaching on the ward to detailed training programmes. They are involved in the training of pharmacist from their first year at university but also provide teaching for non pharmacy staff such as doctors, nurses and medical students. There are weekly education sessions within the department organised and delivered by members of staff but the most interesting thing they offer is the possibility of attendind conferences from external speakers. So, they invite qualified persons to talk about a given topic and to help to build relationships to other health care professionals.
That was one of the things that encouraged me to come to this Hospital as I think it is important to reserve a space for training within the work, don’t you?

  2. It’s still too early for me to assess the training offer of the hospital in general and the “Care of the Elderly” department in particular. What I can already say is that this offer is really huge. They gave me a brochure yesterday during the daily department meeting with all the courses I can attend and I got shocked. There is all type of training activities: from regular in-person courses, to distance learning programs as well as conferences and seminars with interesting specialists. It seemed to me so amazing, that I will have problems by choosing some of them.
I will attend some rehab training, that’s for sure! It will be very useful for my job.

  3. As days go by, I realize how big this hospital is and the problems I have when I need to solve any issue. It is not like the small hospital I used to work in before. I think I have to learn much more about it than I already know.
I talked to my unit colleagues about this question and I felt slightly relieved when they confess having had the same concerns at the beginning of their jobs here.
But this relief is going to be useless on my daily routine. I have been looking at some training on procedures for this particular hospital, which seem incomprehensible to me.
They have a session every month for the newly landed here. I am going to apply for the next one. Hoping that will help a little...
